PRESS RELEASE: Nigel Lamb Wins Master Class Race Of Putrajaya Redbull Air Race!!!

Britain’s Nigel Lamb upset Austria’s Hannes Arch in an action-packed Red Bull Air Race World Championship battle in the sweltering tropical heat of Putrajaya, getting an emotional first career victory. Australia’s Matt Hall took third in the first-ever east Asia race in the world’s fastest motorsport series.

Arch nevertheless moved into the overall lead with 30 points after the third round of the eight-race world championship that has stops in seven countries on three continents. Bonhomme, who saw his string of 15 straight podiums abruptly ended, is second overall with 25 points, while Lamb moved into third on 17 points.

Lamb, who remains hugely popular in Malaysia after touring in the tropical nation as a display pilot for five years earlier in his career, gave his local fans watching from the shores of Putrajaya Lake a clinical demonstration of superb flying under the humid skies. Undeterred by the temperatures that soared into the high 30s, Lamb kept his cool flying first in the Final Four on the high-speed, low-altitude track and stopped the clock in 1:15.023 – the fastest run of the day. Hall came close with 1:15.691 and Arch came even closer at 1:15.597.

“I never thought I’d feel this emotion,” said Lamb, fighting off tears after getting six second-place finishes before in 43 previous races in his seven-year career. “It’s a great feeling. After seven years, and all the ups and downs, this is the payoff.”

Canada's Pete McLeod, the last pilot in the Final Four, finished the day in frustration: in pushing for every fraction of a second, he exceeded the maximum speed entry of 370 kph / 200 knots through the Start Gate, resulting in his flying session classed as Did Not Finish (DNF).

Results: 1. Nigel Lamb (GBR), 2. Hannes Arch (AUT), 3. Matt Hall (AUS), 4. Pete McLeod (CAN), 5. Paul Bonhomme (GBR), 6. Martin Sonka (CZE), 7. Peter Besenyei (HUN), 8. Matthias Dolderer (GER), 9. Kirby Chambliss (USA), 10. Yoshihide Muroya (JPN), 11. Nicolas Ivanoff (FRA), 12. Michael Goulian (USA)

World Championship Standings: 1. Arch (30 points), 2. Bonhomme (25), 3. Lamb (17), 4. McLeod (17), 5. Hall (14), 6. Sonka (8), 7, Muroya (7), 8. Ivanoff (5), 9. Dolderer (4), 10. Besenyei (2)

PRESS RELEASE: Japanese Ace Muroya Set To Race At Putrajaya Red Bull Air Race 2014!!

JAPANESE ace Yoshihide Muroya is all set to race in Putrajaya during Round 3 of the Red Bull Air Race this weekend (May 17-18). The 41-year-old comes to the country's federal administrative capital on a high after a podium finish in Round 2 at Rovinj, Croatia last month.

He finished third behind Hannes Arch of Austria and Britain’s Paul Bonhomme, who are currently both leading the point standings. Muroya, who is currently fourth in the standings, is the only Asian pilot out of 12 pilots in the Master Class and is keen to make Asia proud on race day.

"It definitely feels closer to home – as there is only a one hour time difference in Japan, it will be so easy to adapt with no jet lag! I think of it as a ‘neighbour home race’," said the Fukushima born. Muroya started glider flight training in 1991 at age 18 when he joined a university glider club as an inexpensive way to fly.

Four years later, he took third place in the Japan glider championship. He went to the United States on his own to earn his pilot's licence in Los Angeles at the age of 20. He started aerobatics flying in 1996 and, in 2003, took part in the Unlimited World Aerobatic Championship. Since 2006 he has been flying air shows in a wider region stretching from the UAE to Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Spain.

Muroya has brought numerous innovations to the sport and, in particular, he introduced pre-race meditation. He has remained one of the most stoically optimistic pilots in the field despite enduring several untimely mechanical problems that sidelined him for part of the 2010 season.

"It (Red Bull Air Race) is really quite close racing against each other. As a pilot, it's a lot of fun to fly the race. It's a special world. There aren't many pilots who can do what we do," said Muroya. As for his chances in Putrajaya, he said: "For now, my tactic is to just continue to study how I should be flying. For me, this process is important, but the [race] result isn't important."

"I have a lot of big fans in Japan. I have good connections with the Asian aviation scene, so I'm hoping that there will be a lot of fans in Malaysia too. It's a great feeling that there are so many fans supporting me. I think it could add extra pressure, but the support makes it more exciting and I will enjoy the race even more because of it," added Muroya.

Tickets to the Red Bull Air Race Putrajaya can be purchased online via Ticket Pro's website.

PRESS RELEASE: Toyota Eco Youth Verification Visit!!

The Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) programme, one of UMW Toyota’s CSR pillars, enters its 14th year with challenging projects from 16 participating schools. Officially launched in February, the programme continues to challenge teachers and students to do their part for the environment using resourceful and creative means.

Initiated in 2001 as a simple eco challenge among schools, TEY has developed into a full-fledged public engagement campaign since 2010 when the challenge was expanded to involve the local communities. The advent of social media in the recent years has also changed the way the programme is conducted, with more savvy participants using the web to garner support and disseminate information.

At the heart of TEY is the 8-Step Problem-Solving Methodology, Toyota’s proprietary philosophy which is used across the board in all Toyota entities worldwide. The methodology follows a step-by-step guide to tackling problems, starting with identification of a problem, understanding the situation, setting targets, analysing the cause and effect, drafting and implementing countermeasures, checking the results and standardisation control.

TEY participants are first given training on the 8-Step Problem-Solving Methodology before embarking on their selected projects. Along the way, UMW Toyota Motor continues to provide guidance and advice on project implementation.

“Every year, the projects that are being proposed by participants continue to improve in quality. We are delighted to see our 8-Step Problem Solving Methodology being applied in various ingenious ways, always ending with positive and sustainable results,” says Datuk Ismet Suki, President of UMW Toyota Motor.

As in previous years, waste management continues to take centre stage this year, with eight schools focusing on public littering, clogged drains, illegal dump sites and ponds or rivers choked with rubbish.

Some schools decided to attempt new ventures, such as SMK Clifford in Pahang who will be tackling the problem of birds’ droppings at the Kuala Lipis town; SMK Putrajaya Presinct 9 (1) who ambitiously looking into paddy-planting as a greywater treatment process; SMK Convent Kajang will be turning a home for underprivileged girls into a model eco home; and SMK Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu is trying to revive a traditional river and fishery rehabilitation system known locally as the Bombon System.

Strategic partnerships are important in any community project, and two schools, SMK Putrajaya and SMK Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu have successfully worked out collaborations with University Putra Malaysia (UPM) and University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) respectively. Similarly, students from SMK Convent Kajang have also visited 3R Quest, a recycling and bio-enzyme company, to get technical advice and inspiration.

Apart from their community projects, some schools are also conducting internal programmes, such as SMK Paya Kemunting, Kedah, who recently launched their garden zoning project using a mentor-mentee system. The project will see the entire school being transformed into a green living space that is conducive for learning.

“The key message is that everyone can do a part for the environment whether it is just driving a 3R campaign at a local mosque to get people to reduce, reuse and recycle, giving a playground or wasteland a facelift, or reviving a dead river, we can all do something if we get together and tackle the problem using the 8-Step Problem-Solving Methodology” stresses Datuk Ismet.

Winning schools will receive RM10,000 for the grand prize, RM7,000 for second prize, and RM5,000 for third prize winner. For more information, log on to www.toyotaecoyouth.com.my or view the blog at www.ecoyouthblog.toyota.com.my

Perodua vehicle parts sales have grown from RM163 million to RM243 million, a 50% increase from 2009 to 2013. This growth is based on the total number of vehicles in operations and intakes at its 178 service centres nationwide.

“As our new vehicle sales business grows, our parts operations also increase in tandem; to this end, the construction of this new parts centre was announced in 2012 as part of our efforts to improve our after sales business in terms of storage and efficiency,” Perodua President and CEO, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

Perodua Chairman, Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin officiated the event. Also present is Petronas Dagangan Bhd Managing Director & CEO, Encik Mohd Ibrahimnuddin Mohd Yunus and Lubetech Sdn Bhd Executive Director, En Megat Shahrul Azmir as well as Perodua Board members.

With over 2.4 million Perodua vehicles sold since 1994, the Perodua’s parts and accessory business is fast growing to meet demand.

“Aside from meeting local demand, we are also exporting our parts to 9 countries, which include Nepal, Fiji, Singapore, United Kingdom, Mauritius, Malta, Sri Lanka, Brunei and Indonesia.”

“Over the last 3 years, we have recorded a positive growth of an average 42.8% in parts exports and we see the potential to further grow our parts exports particularly to support our completely build up (CBU) export volumes,” Aminar said.

“That being said, our current focus will be to support our existing distributors and to maintain the parts sales’ growth momentum over the next 3 to 5 years to meet the demands of our customers while strengthening our business,” he added.

PRESS RELEASE: Malaysian Halim Othman Prepares For Challenger Cup of Red Bull Air Race Putrajaya!!!

Having qualified for a sport where pilots endure up to ten G-forces as they reach top speeds of up to 370 km/h while flying a single-seater plane at very low altitude, former Royal Malaysian Air Force pilot Halim Othman maintains an air of quiet confidence as he reflects on his upcoming debut in the world’s fastest motorsport series.

Round 3 of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship will be held in Putrajaya from 17-18 May and with the ‘Restricted Super License’ he obtained at the Red Bull Air Race Qualification Camp in Slovenia this year, Halim will compete in the Challenger Cup competition on the first day of the event (Saturday).

Halim’s inspiring journey began three years ago and he remembers juggling his day job as Executive Team Leader of KRISAKTI, Malaysia’s first full-time national air display team, as well as undergoing stringent training for the Red Bull Air Race.

“I had two major hurdles to overcome. Qualifying was the biggest hurdle because I had to pass the same tests as the world’s most exceptional pilots. The second challenge was to learn to fly safely in accordance with the stipulated rules of the competition, while also flying as fast as I can,” said the top Malaysian aviator.

Halim revealed that he has been receiving special coaching from American Mike Mangold, a former Red Bull Air Race World Champion in 2005 and 2007, and underwent rigorous training with him six months ago both in Malaysia as well as in the US.

“This sport is all down to skill and precision. With strict new safety rules in place, all competition planes are provided by Red Bull Air Race and are tuned in accordance to regulations.

Speaking of his competition, Halim noted that two pilots seem to be in very good form this year judging from their performances in Abu Dhabi and in Rovinj, and Francois Le Vot of France, who currently leads the Challenger Cup rankings with 10 points, is set to be the pilot to beat at Putrajaya.

As this will be his first time competing, Halim admits he will place his primary focus during his debut on racing the plane safely through the course.

“However, I won’t deny that I also want to get a good result. If there is strong crowd support, I think I will be very motivated to go for it,” said the passionate Halim.

With his Restricted Super License, Halim will participate in three Challenger Cup races this year – Round 3 in Putrajaya, Round 5 at the Ascot Racecourse, UK (Aug 16-17) and Round 6 at the Texas Motor Speedway, US (Sept 6-7).

Asked about whether he aims to one day compete in the Master Class of the world championship, Halim explains that there are only a few differences between the Master and Challenger Classes and so it is a real possibility.

“The tracks are similar but are made easier than the Master Class racetrack and the planes are almost the same The purpose of the Challenger Class is to give upcoming pilots enough experience so they have the opportunity to step up to the Master Class with an Unrestricted Superlicense. With enough training, my goal is to be a part of the Master Class” he said.

Similar to motorsport racing, Red Bull Air Race pilots race together with a team and Halim is proud to be represented by an all-Malaysian team and hopes to inspire them to the highest level.

“While we will focus on the Challenger Class in the first year, we will also prepare for the future as one day I would like to race as Team Malaysia. That will enable us to show the world our ability to compete at this level,” said the Malaysian pilot.

In his role at KRISAKTI, Halim will have access to the best and most passionate young Malaysian pilots, and hopes to nurture those who show promise, although he concedes that qualifying the Red Bull Air Race requires a special amount of skill and experience.

“The Red Bull Air Race is special and you need to have a very high level of skill to participate. I have experienced what you need to go through and I can assure you it is very difficult,” he confessed.

For young Malaysian pilots who aspire to his level, Halim said they would require three things.

“They must have commitment, they must undergo the training, especially with an emphasis on safety, and they must get support from sponsors. said Halim.

Halim will be racing in the Challenger Class on Saturday 17 May (only Master Class Qualifying will be held on Saturday with the full race on Sunday) and Malaysians certainly should not miss catching this plucky Malaysian pilot in action as he makes his debut in one of the world’s most exhilarating racing competitions.

Tickets to the Red Bull Air Race Putrajaya can be purchased online via Ticket Pro's website.
