PRESS RELEASE: Winners of the Asia Pacific 2014 Tint-Off Competition in Malaysia Announced!!!

Automotive window film installers from across the Asia Pacific region revved up their game at the Asia Pacific 2014 Tint-Off Championship, organized by U.S-based Eastman Chemical Company, the manufacturer of LLumar® automotive window films, and its sole distributor in Malaysia, Tint Auto (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, that was held yesterday at the Sunway Convention Centre.

The tinting competition which took place in the afternoon, pinnacled at the Gala Dinner during the night where contestants from three countries were announced as the top three winners for this year.

Mr. Ju Jongcheol, a professional installer from South Korea took the Championship title as this year’s most professional and best automotive window film installer in the region. Completing the skillful task with a score of 95 points, he defeated 15 other participants from around the Asia Pacific, Australasia and Middle East regions.

Mr Lim Loke Choon from Malaysia emerged as the second place winner with a score of 94 points and Mr Zheng Shihai from China took the third place with a score of 93 points.

“This challenge really puts your skills as professional automotive window film installers to the test,” said Mr Ju Jongcheol, the Asia Pacific 2014 Tint-Off Champion. “It was definitely a close competition as there were several highly capable and skillful professionals, but I am proud to win the Championship title. This is truly a sweet victory! Thank you LLumar and Tint-Auto (M) for the opportunity!”

Officially launched by Y.B. Datuk IR. Dr. Wee Ka Siong (Minister in Prime Minister’s Office), the Championship event began with high-energy performances that created excitement prior to a formal briefing session on the competition rules for all contestants.

Each contestant was given a competition bay that included a Volkswagen Passat and a supply of high-quality AIR series of automotive window film from LLumar which, with its nano-ceramic technology and high protection from ultra violet rays yet enhanced visibility, has gained high traction in the Malaysian market.

The competition underscored the importance of skills and pride for a job well done. Amid roaring cheers from supporters and spectators, contestants exhibited energetic enthusiasm in their quests to complete the perfect tint job within the stipulated timeframe.

Dr. Jim Ziegler, Regional Business Director of Eastman Chemical, Performance Films business unit said, “As one of the leading producers of high-quality, aftermarket window films and high-value precision-coated film and film components, LLumar® is enthusiastic and passionate about bringing installers of LLumar automotive window film from around the Asia Pacific, Australia and Middle East regions together in this exciting event.”

“The car tinting industry is one of the most important peripheral sectors of the automotive category. This international competition provided an opportunity for installers to raise standards, exchange best practices and network during a fun event, while we recognize and award the best professional skills in the business.”

Using LLumar automotive window film, contestants were seen striving for perfection during the competition. Winners were judged on factors including tidiness of installation, cleanliness of vehicle/handover readiness, and quality of application (gaps, edge cuts and visible damages).

“Installing car window film may look easy, but it isn’t,” said Mr Michael Tan, CEO of Tint Auto (M) Sdn. Bhd. “Experience, good skills and high-quality film are pre-requisites to ensuring long-lasting protection of the car and benefits to its owner. A flawless installation will ensure that no dirt or other contaminates are left behind, which could destroy the chance of winning the competition. LLumar is recognized for its wide product selection and strong brand name, especially for safety and security film which is trusted by many car owners in Malaysia. This competition selects the best installer of the products.”

“LLumar automotive window films are known and trusted by the numerous automotive brands for their quality and proprietary scratch-resistant coating. Furthermore, today’s gadget-equipped drivers would also be glad to know that these state-of-the-art nano technology films do not interfere with cell phones, radio reception, radar detectors, or global positioning systems,” added Dr. Ziegler.

The competition started 14 years ago in the United States (U.S.) when the U.S.-based manufacturer of LLumar professional window films began sponsoring and organizing international tint-off conferences and competitions. The success of the U.S. competition led to a spin-off in the Asia Pacific region, with the first Championship being held in Shenzhen, China in 2011 and the second Championship held in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2012. Thus, this Championship was held for the third time in the region and first time in Malaysia.

A total of 16 teams from countries including Malaysia, China, South Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Oman took part in the competition.

The judges for the competition include experts from Eastman Chemical Company: Danny Wong Kam Lam, Regional MTS Manager; Richard Dill, Quality Assurance Manager; and Charlie Zhao Li, Technical Training Team Leader

NEW LAUNCHES: Five Reasons Why the New Ford Fiesta ST Offers An Exhilarating Ride

Since Henry Ford built and sold the company’s first car in 1903, the humble machine has become far more than simply a way of getting from point A to B. For many, it has evolved into a way of life, an expression of thrill-seeking, adrenaline-pumping fun.

For these people, the Fiesta ST – Ford’s newest contribution to the world of hot hatches – is just the ticket. Soon to arrive in Malaysian showrooms, it is a gutsy, compact performance car that boasts both responsiveness and raw power.

Here are five reasons why the new Fiesta ST is the best pick for a thrilling drive – whether on the highway or the racetrack.

#1: Globally Acclaimed Awards and Recognition

Backed by 22 globally acclaimed awards, the new Fiesta ST is the most awarded performance compact car Ford has ever made. Among its accolades are being named BBC TopGear Magazine Car of the Year (UK), Echappement magazine Sports Car of the Year (France), and most recently a 2014 Automobile Magazine All-Star (US).

#2: Race Car Design

With an aggressive and sporty design, the new Fiesta ST features a unique grille and chin spoiler with a new rear diffuser and fascia extensions. Dual chrome-tipped exhausts, a high-mount spoiler, and unique 17-inch wheels complete the visual package.

Inside, the telescopic steering wheel sets the driver in a position that is similar to most race cars, while a sound symposer feeds the throaty engine noise directly into the cabin, offering a great soundtrack while accentuating feedback quality and response. Pushing the sports alloy pedal flat to the floor, ST drivers will experience a surge of torque that pushes them back into the Recaro seat.

#3: Epic Flat Cornering

The new Fiesta ST offers race-like handling in a compact performance car. The rear axle gets increased roll stiffness to improve stability through fast and narrow corners, while the body sits 15 millimetres closer to the ground than other Fiesta variants.

It has increased mechanical grip provided by suspension improvements and is enhanced with electronic Torque Vectoring Control to reduce understeer, rotating well during hard cornering manoeuvres. With three levels of electronic stability control (ESC) to choose from – off, standard, sport – drivers are able to select the amount of electronic aid to suit their desires, whatever the road conditions.

All these value added features give ST drivers epic flat cornering – be it on the race track or on a winding road.

#4: Direct and Responsive Steering

The steering in the new Fiesta ST is more direct and responsive than the base Fiesta, while a unique suspension system with modified front knuckle makes for a quicker overall steering ratio of 13:6:1. The high performance rear disc brakes available in the new Fiesta ST helps drivers stay in control of the car at all times.

The six-speed manual transmission provides an easy and clean shift action that allows any driver to express their true pledge to performance driving.

Simply put, the new Fiesta ST provides a peerless smooth steering and responsive handling with every turn.

#5: Unmatched Performance

The new Fiesta ST gives the performance and feel of an engine twice its size. Equipped with a 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine, it delivers 182 PS and 240 Nm of torque that can achieve 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. It also comes with an ‘overboost’ turbo function – similar to the one available in Ford Focus ST – enabling it to throttle up to a maximum torque of 290 Nm on the race track and a top speed of 220km/h. The new Fiesta ST is guaranteed to bring out the racing DNA as soon as the driver gets behind the wheel.

The new Fiesta ST is now available for pre-launch booking, and is priced at RM149,888.

The variant also has an upgraded infotainment system with a 2-DIN head unit. This now consists of a DVD player with a 7-inch touchscreen that also acts as a display for the rear view camera. The audio unit, with an AM/FM receiver has connectivity options for various devices and also accepts SD card media as well as voice commands. A smartphone link is also available for compatible smartphone models, as well as Bluetooth hands-free system with steering wheel switches.

EXTERIOR

On the exterior, the 1.8G door handles have a chrome finish which matches the character line along the side of the car. Not so evident but which will be a convenient feature is the auto on/off mode for the headlamps. When set to AUTO, the headlamps will automatically come on when the external lighting level is low (e.g. entering a basement carpark), and switch off when the lighting level is high.

FUN-TO-DRIVE

Technically, there are no changes to the proven 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre Dual VVT-i engines with 7-speed Super CVT-i, which has been praised by local motoring journalists, for combining both advantages of fun-to-drive feeling of a conventional automatic transmission and fuel efficiency of a conventional CVT.

While the efficiency and reduced weight inherent in a pulley-type CVT would seem an ideal solution for vehicles emphasizing fuel efficiency, there is the characteristic CVT “rubber band” driving sensation of the engine winding to its power band upon hard acceleration. Toyota’s engineers have improved the drivability of the Corolla Altis by adapting discrete stepped “gears” or shift points, into the car’s acceleration and deceleration curves. The Corolla Altis’ Super CVT-i even mimics the familiar characteristics of hydraulic automatics creating a sense of positive shift engagement. There’s also a more linear connection between pedal effort and acceleration feel compared to previous CVT designs.

FUEL ECONOMY

Toyota engineers addressed challenges presented by typical CVT design such as the high level of hydraulic pressure CVT’s require for operation, and the optimization of the pulley ratio range to offer the best performance and fuel economy. Typically, CVT hydraulic-fluid pumps are driven at the same rate as the engine speed; as a result, the pump wastes considerable effort, impacting transmission efficiency at higher engine speeds as the pump moves more fluid than necessary to lubricate and sandwich the CVT’s belt. With the Corolla Altis’ Super CVT-i, hydraulic pressure was reduced to an optimal point to protect against belt slippage, while conserving drive effort to limit excess pumping losses.

For a belt-driven CVT, the range of speed ratios is determined by the diameters of the input and output pulleys. The greater the disparity in size between these two pulleys, the greater the range of gear ratios, efficiency and performance the transmission can offer. The current 1.8-litre Super CVT-i offers a forward gear ratio range of 0.396 to 2.480 (which is wider than previous generation 1.8-litre Super CVT-i of 0.411 to 2.386), which works well for acceleration, cruising speeds, and fuel-conscious driving. There is also a transmission fluid warmer is used to help get fluid to optimal temperature faster.

MINOR UPGRADES TO 1.8E

As for the 1.8E base variant, it receives minor upgrades with Smart Entry & Start System, illumination for the cupholders and front foot well, exterior door handle chrome finish, and auto on/off mode for the headlamps. Meanwhile, with the introduction of 1.8G, the 2.0G will not be continued.

OTHERS

As before, customers can also select options such as a custom-designed aerokit. For those who require a GPS route navigation system, there is also an optional upgraded package which fits neatly into the 2-DIN space on the dashboard. The Toyota premium security and solar film, which is JPJ-compliant with a 7-year warranty, remains standard for all variants.

As with most models offered by UMW Toyota Motor, the Toyota Corolla Altis comes with a 3-year/100,000 km (whichever occurs earlier after first registration) warranty, subject to conditions stated in the Owner’s Handbook. This reflects the confidence that UMW Toyota Motor has in the superior build quality of its vehicles, a hallmark of Toyota products.

The on-the-road price (individual private registration with insurance, metallic color, Peninsular Malaysia) are as follows:

TOYOTA COROLLA ALTIS 2.0V with Additional Safety Package : RM139,915.30

TOYOTA COROLLA ALTIS 2.0V : RM136,015.30

TOYOTA COROLLA ALTIS 1.8G : RM119,900.00

TOYOTA COROLLA ALTIS 1.8E : RM115,900.00

PRESS RELEASE: Safety and Fuel Efficient Remains Top Priority For MAN

One of the world’s leading supplier of trucks and bus came out in full force to show the latest at the IAA Commercial Vehicle in Hanover. The major trade fair for mobility, transportation and logistics enabled visitors to see the full diversity of MAN Truck & Bus models.

The central theme of the new models was fuel efficiency, as innovative technology has resulted in reduced fuel consumption on the part of trucks and buses, resulting in lower running costs on the one hand and less emission on the other.

MAN has also made great strides when it comes to ensuring even more safety features, providing confidence to passengers and vehicle owners.

“In Europe, there are many regulations and stringent laws as safety is a top priority in many countries when it comes to heavy vehicles. But our engineers are also continuously striving to innovate through engineering for safety features,” said Dirk Szusgien, Head of After Sales for MAN Truck & Bus (M) Sdn. Bhd. in a recent interview.

“Bus and coach is one of the largest commercial modes of passenger transport apart from the private car. It provides more than 50% of European public transport services,” he said.

In Europe, according to the CARE (EU road accident database) 2009, statistics shows it is the safest of all road transport modes and equal the safety of trains, despite sharing infrastructure with other users and modes.

From 2007 to 2008, bus and coach passengers represented 0.57% of road fatalities in the European Union, lower even than the 0.79% attributed to agricultural tractors. Private vehicles contributed to almost half of road fatalities at 49.58%.

Among the regulations set up to prevent driver fatigue is to ensure that drivers take breaks and rest periods.

“A driver may not drive for more than 4 hours without taking one break of 45 minutes or several breaks of at least 15 minutes taken over the 4 hours. The daily driving limit is 9 hours but twice a week this may be extended to 10 hours. A maximum of 90 driving hours in two consecutive weeks must be observed,” Dirk said about the driving regulations in the EU.

“In order to record the driving time and rest periods of bus and coach drivers, vehicles have to be fitted with a recording device called an electronic tachograph, which records the hours on a computer chip. Hence, a driver cannot drive more than the stipulated hour, even on another bus because the system is all synchronized,” Dirk added.

Based on many years of accident research, MAN has specifically improved the active safety of its trucks and buses. This has given rise to today´s assistance systems that are available as standard features for their coach and bus in Europe and support drivers in precisely those situations which have proved to be the most frequent causes of accidents, namely Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) and Lane Guard System (LGS).

Apart from the systems already available as standard features on show at the IAA, MAN researchers also offered a preview of systems on which they are currently focusing with the aim of supporting drivers in other accident-prone driving situations. These will act as an extended "electronic eye" for the driver who, from the cabin, has no direct view of certain points around his vehicle.

All these systems are conceptual prototypes illustrating the present status of MAN´s research in the field of active safety. They include a lane change assistant for multi-lane highways, a turn-off assistant for turning right in urban traffic, as well as a camera system which, in future, will replace a number of various side mirrors and is able to combine the surrounding traffic flow into a single picture.

“However, even without these technological advances, just as important is that the vehicle must be well maintained. Servicing vehicles ensures it road worthiness and also help improves fuel efficiency. Maintenance of vehicles is also a safety issue. Hence, for MAN vehicles on the Malaysian roads, it is important that coaches and trucks be serviced by experienced MAN personnel. That is why MAN is opening up another service center, this time in Seberang Prai, Penang. We have a service centre in Rawang and Kota Bharu and opened in Johor Bahru in June. We will be ready in December for Penang. Our objective is to provide convenience for our customers as we serve the north, central and south region with the best after sales service,” Dirk added

PRESS RELEASE: Kelantan School Emerges As Champion In 2014 Toyota Eco Youth Challenge

What does it take to be a winner? For the students of SMK Hamzah 2, Kelantan, who came out tops in the recently concluded 2014 Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) Challenge, it was many hours of cleaning stinky clogged drains sweating under the hot sun painting murals, going from door to door of shop lots asking for sponsorship, visiting local councils and universities, and coming up with a catchy presentation to tip the marks in their favour.

The participants’ hard work won the school RM10,000 in prize money. For the winning team, however, the prize money meant little compared to the learning experience and exposure they garnered throughout the project.

When they first started out, all they had was a dream of creating something that would leave a lasting impact not just upon the judges of TEY but also upon the Kelantanese. Their project of transforming Lorong Che Mek Molek in Machang from a dirty back street into an art hub with colourful and pretty murals plus art pieces drew praises from the panel of judges and local traders who now enjoy a steady stream of visitors to the site.

The most difficult part was getting the infrastructure ready, they divulged. The clogged drains needed to be cleared and covered, while the potholed road needed to be tarred and walking paths created. Thanks to project partners such as the local municipal council and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Machang’s Faculty of Art and Design, the street was successfully given a total facelift.

The full commitment of the team was apparent: SMK Hamzah 2 also emerged champion for Best Presentation, winning themselves an additional RM1,000. Not only that, both their teachers, Khalil Husin and Muhammad Salmizi Ismail, won themselves the Most Supportive Teacher award.

Equally impressive was the project by second prize winners SMK Paya Kemunting, Kedah, who walked home with RM7,000 for their project of transforming a polluted water catchment area at Taman Setia Jaya into a mini recreational park for the local residents. Working with project partners Nichias Sdn. Bhd, (Playright) Team Constead Sdn Bhd, Kubang Pasu Municipal Council, the state’s Department of Irrigation and Drainage, and Universiti Utara Malaysia, the students organised a cleaning up / gotong royong and decorated the site with stone slabs, garden chairs and flowering plants.

SMK Bertam Indah’s project to transform the At-Takwa Mosque’s Recycling Centre from a disorganised space to a neat and tidy area conducive for recycling activities won them third prize. Simply giving the walls a fresh coat of paint and turning the surrounding area into a mini rock garden with flowering plants added an aesthetic element to the Recycling Centre, making it more welcoming and encouraging more people to practise recycling.

The school also walked home with the Best Website award, winning them an additional RM1,000 on top of their prize money of RM5,000, while SMK Labuan, emerged winner for Best Exhibition.

In its 14th year, TEY contenders have become increasingly competitive, more so with the increase in prize money this year as additional motivation. Marks were given based on an onsite judging process, as well as website/blog development, exhibition displays and presentation at the TEY Convention and Closing Ceremony which was held in October.

According to Datuk Ismet Suki, President of UMW Toyota Motor, the eco challenge aims to cultivate environmental leaders through out-of-classroom lessons. “Exposing students to real-life situations and environmental problems, and encourage them to formulate innovative solutions will equip them with high thinking skills, in line with the Ministry of Education’s Education Blueprint,” he adds.

Initiated as a simple environmental competition among secondary schools in 2001, TEY was extended to include environmental problems in the local community in 2011. Participating teachers and students had to undergo an intensive workshop on Toyota’s 8-step Problem Solving Methodology to help them identify problems, find possible solutions and monitor the project along the way.

The TEY programme is one of the key CSR pillars of UMW Toyota Motor focused on the environment. The car manufacturer also has two other CSR pillars targeted at road safety and philanthropy.
