Full Press Release:
Conceived as a Recreational Urban SUV, the imported Toyota Rush offers the advantages of a small passenger car (fuel economy and manoeuvrability) with those of a SUV such as the high seating position and greater ground clearance. Since its launch in 2008, this Toyota model has proven popular for those who require a versatile vehicle that can accommodate the family in comfort and also take the ‘rough stuff’.
As it has done for decades, Toyota constantly consults owners and customers for their feedback so that improvements can be made to its products. Any issues highlighted are addressed and suggestions considered for inclusion in model updates. At the same time, with kaizen (constant improvement) as an integral part of Toyota’s philosophy, every model receives changes during its model life though many may not be visible.
The new upgraded Toyota Rush launched today is available in three variants with the following prices for Peninsular Malaysia:
Rush 1.5S Automatic – RM96,990
Rush 1.5G Automatic – RM91,190
Rush 1.5G Manual – RM88,190
Exterior Colour
Five body colour choices are now available, of which three are new: Champagne Metallic (new), White (new), Grey Metallic (new), Black Mica and Silver Mica Metallic.
Exterior Design
The new Rush has cosmetic changes which give it a tougher and more rugged image while retaining its modern and distinct form which is based on a curvaceous theme. Of note is the new grille complemented by a new front bumper with restyled integrated foglamp housings for 1.5S variant on each lower corner.
The overall looks of the rear end of the Rush, with its wraparound glass, remain the same but there is now a number bumper with a restyled protector plate and newly-designed combination lights.
In line with current trends, the door mirrors have turn indicators in their housings, making the driver’s intentions more visible and the chrome door handles are the grip-type which are easier to use. All variants come with a stylish, custom-designed spare wheel cover on the rear side-hinged door that has a lock to secure the full-sized spare wheel.
Interior Design
The Rush interior design is clean and functional and in place of the previous light ivory colour, there is now a bold dark grey colour theme. Being darker, stains will not be so visible, something which will be appreciated by owners who have active lifestyles.
With the change in the interior colour theme, items such as the door trim, carpet mats, bag hook (under the passenger headrest) and centre console box have also had their colour changed to match. Likewise, the instrument panel has also received some changes to better coordinate with the new cabin colour. The gearknob is also new, both in colour and design.
On the centre part of the dashboard, the console has been completely redesigned and now has an analogue-styled presentation for the audio system area. The audio system has also been upgraded to a 2-DIN type and is compatible with MP3 and WMA music formats. Portable music players and USB thumbdrives can be connected to the unit so that personal selections of music can be played.
Comfort and Convenience
Responding to customer requests for more flexibility, the new Rush now has a 50:50 split backrest for the third row of seats. This allows for partial folding of the third row backrest so that one person can be seated while extra luggage can be carried on one side. In the event that the third row of seating is not needed, it can be folded forward against the back of the second row to provide more cargo space.
The new Rush also comes fully fitted with Toyota Standard Solar Film. This layer of tinted film has been tested and approved by JPJ as it meets Malaysian regulations. Ultraviolet (UV) transmission into the cabin is cut by 99% while infra-red radiation is cut by up to 40%. The film on the windscreen does not interfere with signals from Smartag devices. Because this film is installed by Toyota specialists, high quality is assured.
Suspension System
The suspension of the Rush comprises independent MacPherson struts in front (with a stabilizer bar fitted) and a live axle located by 4 links at the rear with coil springs. For the latest model, the suspension has been slightly improved for better shock absorption, increasing ride comfort for the occupants.
Engine
The Rush is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder 16-valve DOHC petrol engine (3SZ-VE) with Toyota’s Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i). Though small in displacement, the engine delivers up to 109 ps of power at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 141 Nm is available at 4,400 rpm.
The high output is partly due to the use of VVT-i which optimises the opening and closing times of the intake valves continuously according to the driving conditions. The mechanism is so responsive that changes to the timing can be executed within 1/1000th of a second. With combustion optimised, fuel efficiency is also enhanced as fuel is not wasted while toxic components in the exhaust gases are lowered.
For the latest engines, fuel efficiency has been improved around 5% through optimisation of the air-conditioning system while noise levels have been reduced at high speeds (100 – 120 km/h range). For the latter improvement, insulation has been added in the dashboard area and a resonator has also been fitted to the air-cleaner.
Turning Radius
For urban use, the Rush will prove ideal as its turning radius is a tight 5.2 metres (kerb to kerb) which is impressive for a SUV. Rack and pinion power-assisted steering makes it easy to manoeuvre and the short overhangs also make positioning the vehicle in tight spots easy.
Safety
Providing the best possible protection to occupants is a top priority for Toyota’s engineers and every model must meet GOA – the Global Outstanding Assessment which is Toyota’s tough in-house set of safety standards. GOA primarily relates to the body structure which must be able to prevent the impact forces of an accident from harming the occupants. It achieves this by dissipating the forces into the entire body. The Rush bodyshell is fully GOA-certified. Pedestrian safety is also considered and the exterior of the front end is shaped to minimise the impact to a pedestrian’s head and legs, reducing serious injuries in many cases.
All three variants have a SRS airbag for the driver with the Rush 1.5S having an additional one for the front passenger as well. The steering column is collapsible so that it will not be pushed against the driver during severe frontal collision. A reverse sensor also makes reversing safe and easy.
Of course, avoiding an accident in the first place is much better and the Rush has effective Active Safety Systems to help the driver. For 1.5S variant, the brake system has ABS (anti-lock brakes) with Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), the latter being very useful as it adjusts the braking force to each brake depending on load conditions and load distribution. Therefore whether there is a light load or heavy load, stopping power will always be optimum. ABS, of course, manages the brakes so that they do not lock-up in slippery conditions to cause skidding and loss of steering control.
Security System
To protect the Rush against theft, it has a factory-installed security system with an immobilizer in the Engine Control Unit (ECU). Only the correct key code will allow the engine to be started. The cabin is also fitted with an intrusion sensor; besides the normal activation of the alarm when the doors are opened abnormally, unauthorized entry into the cabin will also trigger off the alarm. Should the battery be disconnected or weak, there is also a back-up battery for the security system. To reduce the chances of a hijack, the doors automatically lock whenever the vehicle exceeds a certain speed after moving off.
As with most models offered by UMW Toyota Motor, the new Toyota Rush comes with a 36-month/100,000 kms (whichever occurs earlier after first registration) warranty, subject to conditions stated in the Owner’s Handbook. This reflects the superior build quality of Toyota vehicles wherever they are made in the world because they are all built to the same high standard.
