Hyundai unveiled the most anticipated model - Hyundai Veloster

At NAIAS 2011, Hyundai has finally revealed the most anticipated model the Hyundai Veloster coupe that has a rather funky design with only 4 door coupe. Not to be mistaken by a normal 4 door coupe, this radical design Veloster features a third door only on the right hand side of the car featuring a discreet door handle ala Alfa 147.

In terms of size, the Veloster is 4,218mm long, and 1,790mm wide with a quite long wheel base of 2,649 which eclipse almost all models in its class. The car is powered by a 1.6 Gamma engine with direct injection that features GDI technology and also Dual CVVT that produces a potent 138hp at 6,300rpm and 167Nm of torque at 4,850rpm. Besides this engine, Hyundai also mulls the introduction of 2.0 litre turbo engine that has been slightly detuned from the same engine that powers the Hyundai Sonata 2.0 Litre Turbo. With the use of the 1.6 litre Gamma engine, Hyundai has confirmed that the fuel consumption of this car is 40 mpg which just a few litres shot from the Hyundai target of developing an engine that can achieved a minimum 50 mpg.

In terms of drivetrain, the new Veloster is equipped with a six speed transmission either it is manual or a dual clutch transmission. Like the six speed auto tranny that has been developed in house by Hyundai, the new dual clutch transmission in the Veloster is also being developed in house but Hyundai does not indicate nor confirm whether this transmission also would be a maintenance free transmission like what we have found on the Hyundai Sonata. With this new transmission, the fuel efficiency can be boost by 5 to 6 % and also 3-7% improvement in acceleration when compared to a normal torque convertor auto tranny.

A car with a lot of power and grunt would be worthless without a proper suspension system. In this new Veloster, the front suspension will utilize McPherson strut that is paired with a light weight V-torsion beam with 23mm stabilizer bar for the rear end for a greater cornering and also stability. To further enchance the fuel economy, Hyundai has use the EPS power steering system instead of a normal electro hydraulic setup.
