NEWS: Special Service Campaign For Toyota Vios, Corolla Altis, Alphard and Yaris

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) has announced a Special Service Campaign (SSC) for the replacement of the inflator module in the SRS airbag system on the front passenger side of a certain number of vehicles. This follows the announcement by Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) that an additional number of vehicles are affected by the defect in the inflator module in the SRS airbag system.

This SSC is an expansion of earlier campaigns relating to certain vehicles equipped with SRS airbag inflator modules. The defect is due to propellant degradation occurring after prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures and high temperature cycling. Inflator modules which contain a non-desiccated, phase stabilized ammonium nitrate propellant may cause the rupture of the module. Should such a situation occur, metal fragments will pass through the airbag as it inflates and into the vehicle interior at high speed. As a result, serious injury or death could occur.

Based on information received from TMC, the number of affected Toyota Vios, Corolla Altis, Alphard and Yaris in Malaysia, is around 80,000 units. The vehicles are manufactured between October 2007 and December 2011 and distributed by UMWT. However, units imported by other parties and sold in Malaysia which may be affected by this SSC are not included within this number.

TMC is currently working on obtaining the necessary parts for the SSC. Once the parts are available, UMWT will notify owners to request them to bring their cars to an authorised Toyota service centre to make the necessary replacements which should take about 1 to 3 hours. All costs involved for the replacement will be borne by UMWT.

UMWT is aware that some customers who are not the first owner of these vehicles may not be contactable. To ensure the safety of Toyota owners UMWT advised Toyota owners who own these vehicles to contact any authorised Toyota service centre or calling the Toyota Freephone at 1800-8-TOYOTA (869682).

For this new SSC, UMWT is also currently updating the VIN database and Toyota owners in Malaysia can visit the VIN Checker webpage through https://toyota.com.my/aftersales-services/special-service-campaigns.
