A on the proposed consolidation of the national car companies, i.e. Proton and Perodua has been completed. According to Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, the report will be submitted to the Prime Minister for his consideration. If you still remember, this idea was proposed by Datuk Seri Najib during the Proton’s 25th Anniversary celebration and now the Minister are waiting to set a date to present the report to the Prime Minister.
If you looked at the Minister’s face during the interview which was aired on 8.00pm news, I can assume that the proposed merger will not be materialised and myself as an enthusiast in the auto industry in Malaysia, I am thinking the proposed merger idea will be scrap but a more robust implementation will be in places such as, joint parts development, a more intense parts engineering vendor program, and possibly Perodua first model in house development cars with collaboration with Proton. Hopefully the later idea can become a reality as this will certainly boost both car companies’ sales and fully utilize the abundance of capacity here in Malaysia.
